Although social networking is not my thing. I feel libraries need to embrace it and use them as a marketing tool promoting libraries, events and start engaging people by freeing up books, literacy and knowledge in the real world and the virtual world. All knowledge is good - it is empowering.

I would be open to having meetings and/or on-line discussions to cut down the time away from the branch.

Task 6: Facebook

Have already got a Facebook account refer to earlier blog. I don't use it except as a link to my son's facebook while he is on his OC.
Have added Annie and Helen as friends to my facebook
Have become a friend to Manukau Libraries facebook and have posted comment.

I think people are becoming more aware of 'Facebook' and the need to protect their identity with security setting etc and the the lost of ownership of photos etc. Still if you want to search for lost friends and reach out to strangers and have a lot of time on your hands, then 'Facebook' is a good place to start.

Yes I can and have promoted and assisted customers with 'Facebook'.

Task 5: Music files and mp3s

I've has a look around Amazon and it seems staight forward, I like that it gives you a free download for tranfering the music to your mp3. As I don't have a mp3 player - limited appeal. But our customers would find this site very useful and if asked I would recommend it. It looks very straight forward so I don't think customer would require assistance with it.

Task 4: Books and social networking:
Now I like this site and think it is a great reading advocacy tool. I like the layout simple and very user friendly. I enjoyed looking around - although I was only going to have a quick look I was there for almost an hour and then went in for another look from home. I especially enjoyed the author blogs and found the quizzes fun.

I will recommend and show this to our customers - an excellent resource

Here we go again. I am completing Web 2 for the second time as part of my PDR. Personally it is not my thing - I don't know why people want to have a journal on line and put their self out there, sounds like massive self indulgence! Although I must admit that I enjoy the occassional read of other people blogs.

Since completing Web2 in 2008 I can honestly say I've never been asked by a customer for assistance or information on blogging - if they are into 'it' they know how to do 'it! However I do think it is important to know that blogging and online social networking exists - just in case I'm asked about it

I thought that it may be an age thing that causes me to be resistented to social networking, however some statistic that I READ recently says that my age group (baby boomers) are using on line social networking and it is a growing phenomiun and in some social networking like face book the baby boomers are taking over the site and driving the younger users off. I think their may be some truth to this as I've asked my younger collengues (all very knowledgable about computers etc) if they blogged and/or used facebook, of the 6 young people (aged 16 - 24) they all said no. I then asked 6 of the older staff members aged 40-63 most said they used facebook and 4 said they blogged. Don't understand this I thought it was the folly of youth not age.

My thought on Web2 - it is all about social networking. There are elements of it that system we should be using i.e. library blog, a libray page in facebook, bebo, texting library information etc. The important thing with changing technology - is to be open and receptive to it. Knowledge is power - you don't need to use it yourself but you need to know about it and be able to offer it to patrons.

E Books

E Books what can I say! Books are more than just reading, they are a tactile experience. They feed the soul, by touching the pages of a book, smelling the book especially if new and if not new being able to visualise the reader before. The ability to read a book in the bath, in bed, while travelling, having a book in the bottom of your handbag. It is an intimate relationship

E books in my opinion are a cold way to access information, especially for relaxation.

I know ithey are popular with ypung people especially males - but I feel they are missing out.

Have created a video in earlier post on this blog - of myself, my sister and my mother. I enjoyed doing it but won't re-create this exercise as I'm pushed for time and time waits for no man (woman).

I use Facebook to keep in tourch with my son who is overseas. I have an account so I can access his page, but have not put anything on my face. I am a very private person and choose who I disclose information to. I personally feel people give out to much information and it at times must feel as if people are rummaging through your knicker drawer.

Really good site if you use the internet all the time - would organise things. However if you only use the Internet for work and to do on line shopping, it wouldn't be of mush help. Interesting.

It was ok - not a fan off putting myself out there.
Have used wikis for Open Polytechnic Study and have found them very useful.
Have looked at http://booklovers.pbwiki.com/Princeton%20Public%20Library really found this quite interesting and informative, has a new layout that is easy on the eye and encourages the viewer to continue to read their wiki.

A wiki would be good attached to our website for feedback and ideas re our collection etc. Would be great for improved customer service.

Negativity has left the computer. I was so resisted to the idea of blogging and thought it was a waste of time and effect. Boy was I wrong. Yes it can be frustrating but at the same time it captures your imagination and motivates you to stretch and discovery new skills - that will have you blogging into the night.

I have discovered new things on my laptop that I didn't know existed - it is more than a word processor.

I love how blogging crosses all age groups, genders and cultures. The library is alive with staff eager to talk, show and demonstrate their blogs. It's great to see this energy in the library and in the staff.

Creating Rollyo

I have had the same problem, that I had in creating bloglines. Wasted so much time in creating Rollyo and pasting it to my blog. The instructions are so vague - had to ask Lucy to show me how to transfer my Rollyo. I am enjoying the creative side of blogging but I get really fustrated with the lack of clear instructions.

Was watching 'Breakfast TV' while eating my bowl of Sultana Bran before catching the bus for work. Tne announcer was interviewing an academic who had carried out some research on how New Zealand uses the Internet, and one of the stats that she gave was - New Zealand was the second highest user of Blogs, after Iraq.

Well I may have to change my attitude towards Blogging and embrace it. It can't be that difficult if the rest of New Zealand is Blogging.

I found this task very difficult and frustrating - I spent an entire afternoon trying to transfer my blog lines to my blog. I didn't realise that I only needed to post the http!!!

In fact while I'm on this tangent - I have found the instructions are very vague, it is assumed that everyone speaks and breaths computer talk. You almost need a computer glossary beside your PC.

I have done some searching on the Internet and have found 'Taurango City Libraries' 'Practical Application - How to create a Blog', really helpful - wished I had found it at the beginning. Maybe I wouldn't have attempted 3 separate blogs!!! Oh well it has been a learning curve.
